Thirty downtown residents teamed up on April 30th to pick-up the trash and debris left behind during the long winter months. The route for the third annual Westside Community Cleanup included approximately 20 city blocks and several high priority areas identified by the Michigan Department of Transportation, Grand Rapids Streets and Sanitation, and Kent County Road Commission.
From the Grand River to Seward, and Bridge to 6th Street, teams of volunteers from Union Square and River House along with local residents picked up garbage and debris, littering downtown. Several volunteers were armed with smart phones, documenting and reporting graffiti and maintenance issues to the City through the new “GRCity 311″ smart phone app. Volunteers collected 7600 pounds of trash over three hours. The event concluded with a celebration at Broadway Bar, where volunteers were treated to lunch and won gift certificates to local Westside establishments.
A heartfelt thank you to the twenty local businesses that supported this project with donations totaling over $2,000!
